Container traffic handled by the New Mangalore Port (NMPT) rose marginally to 13,595 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) till July 8 of 2013-14 from 13,308 TEUs in the year-ago period.

Mainline vessels started calling at the port in 2007-08. The port handled one mainline vessel during that year.

Raw cashewnut and coffee contribute a major share to the container cargo handling at the New Mangalore Port.

Till July 8 of 2013-14, the port handled 53,126 tonne of raw cashewnuts, against 43,186 tonne of the cargo in the year-ago period. During the period, it handled 46,566 tonne (39,615 tonne) of coffee cargo.

Raw cashewnuts is imported from the East and West Africa by cashew processing industries in coastal Karnataka.

MV Kota Nebulla is the fourth mainline vessel that called at the port during the current financial year, and the 35th since 2007-08. On July 4, the container vessel of Pacific International Lines, called at the New Mangalore Port with raw cashewnut cargo from Port Matwara in East Africa.

Reports indicate that the port handled three container vessels on July 4, and MV Kota Nebulla was one among them.
