Airports Authority of India (AAI) has commenced Aviation Safety Awareness Week 2020. The week-long celebration from November 23-27 is being observed at all airports and air navigation service (ANS) locations managed by AAI across the country.
Arvind Singh, Chairman, AAI, requested all Regional Executive Directors & Airport Directors to be proactive and to devote time personally for monitoring the safety performance of their respective region and station. Singh further stressed that despite the reduction in flight movements during the COVID-19 pandemic, it had been observed that wildlife and bird menace had increased at airports. Safety preventive measures should, therefore, continue unabated irrespective of the traffic volume.
In his message on the occasion, Maneesh Kumar, Deputy Director General (DDG), Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) emphasised to achieve the long-term objective of zero fatality by the year 2030 as envisaged by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) as part of its Global Aviation Safety Plan (GASP-2020-22) through better managed safety systems of stakeholders.
To raise awareness of aviation safety, AAI will undertake various employee engagement programmes at the airports and ANS stations like reviewing documents and facilities, mock drills, preventive maintenance, etc. Various social campaigns too will be rolled out to raise awareness on the issue. Banners and posters are on display across AAI offices and operational centres to educate both external and internal stakeholders on the significance of the Aviation Safety Awareness Week.
To make people living in the vicinity of aviation infrastructure aware of their role in ensuring the safety of aircraft operating in the local airport, airport directors will be organising awareness programmes in schools and colleges on the role of residents in ensuring aviation safety.
