The project removes a longstanding bottleneck and strengthens connectivity across key routes.

Rail infrastructure developer Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL) has completed a key railway initiative for Indian Railways to enhance operational efficiency and improve connectivity in the Hyderabad region. Implemented through RVNL’s Secunderabad Project Implementation Unit (PIU), the Sitafalmandi-Lallaguda Chord Line Project eliminates a long‑standing operational bottleneck and strengthens links across major routes.

The project is part of the upgrade of the Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) Phase‑II in Hyderabad and Secunderabad under the South‑Central Railway.

Spanning 2.2 km, the chord line integrates seamlessly into the existing network through the Lallaguda Yard and Sitafalmandi signalling cabins. Executed within a busy operational corridor, it required complex engineering and careful planning to minimise disruption to train services.

The newly constructed line was inspected by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), South Central Circle, Secunderabad, Madhavi, who cleared it for passenger and freight operations. A successful speed trial between Lallaguda and Sitafalmandi confirmed readiness for service.

RVNL CMD Saleem Ahmad said, “The successful completion of the Sitafalmandi-Lallaguda Chord Line Project reflects RVNL’s commitment to delivering complex railway infrastructure that enhances operational efficiency and strengthens India’s rail network. This project will ease congestion at one of the busiest corridors in the region, improve connectivity, and contribute to faster, safer, and more reliable train operations.”

The project involved inserting 19 new points and crossings, removing five existing ones, and extensive modifications to signalling and interlocking systems to ensure safe and efficient train movements.

The Sitafalmandi-Lallaguda Chord Line provides a direct rail link between the Kazipet, Nizamabad, and Bengaluru (via Kacheguda) routes. By eliminating reliance on the longer Malkajgiri route, the new alignment is expected to reduce congestion at Secunderabad Junction, improve punctuality, enhance line capacity, cut travel time for passenger and freight services, and strengthen rail connectivity across Hyderabad, Telangana, and beyond.
