The project ranks among Vienna’s most significant drinking water investments in decades and is central to the city’s longterm strategy to secure a sustainable, resilient, and climateadapted supply.

VA Tech Wabag has won a major contract from Vienna Water (MA 31), the city’s municipal water authority, for the expansion of the Donauinsel Water Works in Austria. According to the Chennai‑headquartered multinational water technology group, ‘large orders’ fall in the $75-150 million range.

The overall facility is scheduled for completion and commissioning in 2030, followed by acceptance milestones. For WABAG, the project represents a flagship reference in Austria and underlines the Group’s strategic focus on Europe.

WABAG will deliver the complete technology package for the new water works, covering process engineering, electrical engineering, instrumentation and control, as well as building services. The facility will feature a modern multi‑barrier treatment process including oxidation, ozonation, advanced oxidation, filtration, activated carbon filtration, and UV disinfection.

Mahmut Gedek, CEO for Europe Cluster, VA Tech Wabag, said, “The expansion of the Donauinsel Water Works is a landmark project for Vienna’s long‑term drinking water supply and a strong validation of WABAG’s technological expertise. After delivering numerous international projects, we are proud to bring our know‑how directly to Vienna and contribute to the city’s water security for the decades ahead.”

The project is one of Vienna’s most significant drinking water infrastructure investments in decades and forms a central part of the city’s ‘Wiener Wasser 2050’ strategy. This long‑term programme aims to secure a sustainable, resilient, and climate‑adapted drinking water supply for the Austrian capital through diversified sources, modernised treatment facilities, and advanced technologies.

With a design capacity of up to 1,000 litres per second, equivalent to approximately 86 million litres per day (MLD), the new water works will make a substantial contribution to securing Vienna’s long‑term drinking water supply.

The expansion will add a controllable groundwater‑based supply pillar alongside Vienna’s renowned alpine spring water system. The plant will treat groundwater from protected well fields and feed high‑quality drinking water into the city’s supply network, supporting a growing population, rising peak demand, and the challenges posed by climate change.
