Assocham sees huge potential for shipbuilding biz

Industry body in India, Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) has expected a huge potential for ship repairing and shipbuilding business in the country. According to Assocham, more than 20-year-old ships require periodic and extensive repair and maintenance and, in India, of the total 1,122 vessels in the fleet, over 41 per cent are over 20 years old and need regular attention.

The Visakhapatnam Port in Andhra Pradesh is to take up expansion and development works worth Rs 641 crore. The works include dredging and development of West Quay-North berth. It has also taken up nine major projects under the public-private partnership (PPP) mode, 2 of which have been finished and the rest being in various stages, said Deputy Chairman of the port GVL Satya Kumar.
