Using Mumbai as a home port, a cruise liner service will be started by a Chennai-based company Newport Maritime by next year. Newport Maritime, founded by Sivakumar Elayathamby Sinnarajah, a person of Sri Lankan origin and a US citizen, plans to invest $400 million over five years to run the service with two used luxury cruise ships.

Govt drops Chennai mega terminal project for now
Recent media reports say that the Union Shipping Ministry, after failed attempts to get the Chennai Mega Container Terminal up and running, has taken off the project from its list of targets this year. The terminal project cost has gone up from earlier estimates of Rs 3,800 crore to nearly Rs 5,000 crore.

Oil Ministry saves 600 litres of fuel by using Metro rail
The Union Petroleum and and Natural Gas Minister Marpadi Veerappa Moily has said that his ministry alone can save about 600 litre of petrol and diesel worth over Rs 40,000 by travelling by public transport. He traveled by the Delhi Metro rail on October 9.

AP to get another major port at Rs 9,600 cr
On the proposed major port at Dugarajapatnam in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, RITES has submitted a feasibility report. The port is planned to be built at an estimated cost of Rs 9,600 crore.

Port to come up at Honnavar at Rs 600 cr
A new port in Karnataka's Honnavar has been planned by the State government at a cost of Rs 600 crore under the public private partnership (PPP) model. Foundation stone to the port will be laid in November next. And the State government also plans to build a protection wall along its coastline at a cost of Rs 950 crore.

Cargo at major ports up by 2% in Apr-Sept period
In the first half of current financial year,
cargo handled at IndiaĂâs 12 major ports rose by 2.3 per cent, due to a whopping 44 per cent jump in power-grade coal imports. The government-owned ports handled 277 million tonne (mt) of cargo against 270 mt during the same period last fiscal.
