The Union Mines Ministry has expressed displeasure over the unimpressive progress of mineral blocks auctioned by states, reports the Business Standard. Post auctions, little has been done to secure clearances to enable commencement of mining from such blocks.

Excess coal output worries government
As India plans to become completely self-sufficient in energy security in view of the changing circumstances, the government is worried about how to dispose the country's excess coal production, Union Minister for Power Piyush Goyal has said. He said that two years ago, when he had announced a target of one billion tonnes of coal production, Ăâit was an off-the-cuff remarkĂâ to tackle coal shortages prevalent then.

With a hike in coal prices and levy of coal terminal charge, electricity consumers may end up paying more as discoms increase tariffs to counter the hike. This is due to the hike in coal price.

To ensure mining companies follow all regulatory rules, the Ministry of Mines has launched a portal for online filing of evaluation template for star rating of mines, which will prompt miners to quickly adopt sustainable practices for a higher rating.

Railways rationalises coal tariff
The Railways has rationalised coal tariff by reducing the rate for long-distance transportation and increasing it for short distance while imposing Rs 110 per ton coal terminal surcharge at loading and unloading for distance beyond 100 km.
