The Supreme Court allowed mining to resume in Goa, subject to an annual cap of 20 million tonne from leases other than dumps, lifting a ban that it imposed in 2012 but disallowing all so-called deemed lease holders from continuing with the activity.

MoEF defers decision regarding Rajgammar UG coal block
The environment ministry has deferred a decision on granting clearance to underground coal mining project of Monnet Ispat & Energy Ltd in the state of Chhattisgarh. The said company is seeking environment clearance for Rajgammar underground coal mine project located in Korba district of Chhattisgarh.
Transparent moves
In a bid to try and get to the root cause of the delays that were stalling the implementation of projects in the country, the Project Monitoring Group (PMG) under its Chairman Anil Swarup has initiated a process to digitise the whole procedure through which clearances happen. "Our job at the PMG will get reduced as then we will know why the delays are happening and the clogging will not happen.
Xylem introduces pumping systems
With its participation in the International Mining Exhibition 2014 held in Kolkata, Xylem Inc has introduced new pumping systems that reinforce its focus on the global rental business for its premium products being used for the Indian mining sector. Xylem offers a full service rentals programme with a complete line of submersible pumps, engine-driven suction pumps, generators, piping and complementary accessories for long or short-term rental in various countries.
CILs 2014-15 output at 507 mt
The production target for Coal India (CIL) has been fixed at 507 million tonne for 2014-15, according to its Chairman and Managing Director S Narsing Rao. CIL, which accounts for over 80 per cent of the domestic production, contributed 452.5 mt of coal in 2012-13 as against the target of 464 mt.
Essar Ports to invest in Mozambique
Essar Ports will invest up to $25 million (about Rs 150 crore) in a joint venture, which plans to develop a coal terminal at the Beira port in Mozambique. The investment will be made for developing the terminal with 10 million tonne (mt) a year capacity and also to provide a corporate guarantee of up to $10 million on behalf of the joint venture.
Govt sets up coal regulator
The Union Government has set up a regulatory authority for the coal sector through an executive order recently. The coal regulator will advice the government on principles and methodologies for price determination while state-owned Coal India (CIL) will continue to fix prices, subject to coal ministry's approval.
Forest clearance cancelled for Chhattisgarh coal blocks
The National Green Tribunal has cancelled the clearance given by the Environment Minister to Parsa East and Kante-Basan captive coal blocks in Hasdeo Arand forests of Chhattisgarh, overruling the statutory Forest Advisory Committee. The forest clearance was given by the then Union Environment and Forests Minister Jairam Ramesh in June 2011.
New coal, O&G policies in Nagaland
Nagaland has enforced new Coal Policy and Coal Mining Rules. Toward this, the Department of Geology and Mining has issued 17 coal mining leases and 9 small pocket deposit licences to individuals and coal companies. So far, 17 mineral check gates at various exits, two weigh bridges and a rest house have been constructed, according to the annual administrative report of the department tabled in the state assembly.
CIL production misses target
Coal India (CIL) produced 42.56 million tonne (mt) of coal in February, missing its target of 45.41 mt. The company's offtake during the month was at 40.48 mt, while CIL target for February was 43.02 mt, the company said. CIL's production in the first 11 months of the current fiscal was 409.13 mt, while the company's target during the period was 429.29 mt, it said.
