Coal India (CIL) has produced 366.6 million tonne of coal in the first 10 months of 2013-14, fulfilling 75 per cent of its annual target, while clocking a 3.2 per cent growth rate. During these 10 months, while Eastern Coalfields, considered a laggard, clocked a 10.4 per cent growth rate, Western Coalfields went negative, mining an output which was 7.7 cent lower than the same period in 2012-13.

Panel to review on coal linkages

Study to restructure CIL
The Union Minister of State for Coal, Pratik Prakash Bapu Patil said that his ministry has proposed to institute a study on restructuring of Coal India (CIL) in line with the recommendations of the TL Shankar Committee on Road Map for Coal Sector reforms. Accordingly, Ministry of Coal had floated an Expression of Interest (EOI) for engaging consultants for restructuring Coal India to strengthen coal development in the country.
Thermal coal imports via major ports up
The major ports in the country handled around 5.5 million tonne (mt) of imported thermal coal, which is up by 10 per cent on the year, while coking coal imports rose 21 per cent to 3.4 mt, says latest data by Indian ports Association (IPA). The 12 ports handled 47.8 mt of imported thermal coal during April-November, up 35.7 per cent from 35.2 mt from the same period a year ago.
