MPT turns adverse situation into a biz opportunity
Though mining in Goa has been banned, the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) has successfully turned the adverse situation into its favour by attracting new cargo to the port. The port said that now it expects tremendous amount of cargo from neighbouring states into through the MPT.
Thermal coal imports via major ports up by 36%
The 12 government-owned major ports in the country handled around 5.5 mt of imported thermal coal, which is up by 10 per cent on the year, while coking coal imports rose 21 per cent to 3.4 mt, says latest data by Indian ports Association (IPA).

Govt says coal demand may not exceed 60,000 mw capacity
The Union Coal Ministry has told the Coal India (CIL) that the requirement of coal under the fuel supply agreements would not be for more than 60,000 mw by 2015 due to various reasons, including slippages in the schedule for commissioning of projects.
Tribals’ interest to be protected while mining: Govt
Union Minister of Mines, Dinsha Patel has said that the National Mineral Policy, 2008 states that mining activities will be undertaken so that special care is paid to protect the interest of host and indigenous (tribal) population through developing models of stakeholder interest based on international best practice.

Economy grows sub-5% in July-September quarter
Union government's data shows that IndiaÂ’s economy expanded 4.8 per cent in July-September, the fourth straight quarter of sub-5 per cent growth. The major drags for this were slower expansion of government-supported services and continued contraction in the country's mining sector.
Power cos violating coal block norms
Many private power companies in the country were violating the terms and conditions of coal block allocation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) under the jurisdiction of Supreme Court (SC) and the Union Power Ministry (MoP) have found in their probe. The Ministry suspects that these companies have no intention to sell power to discoms but want to sell it to industries or at exchanges at higher rates.
