The capital expenditure of 25 top listed power companies declined 15 per cent to Rs 112,687 crore in 2012-13. The decline in investment may result in a considerable generation and supply crunch by the end of the current Plan, in 2016-17.

Govt may pace up clearances to Rs 49K cr power plants
The Prime Minister Manmohan Singh headed Cabinet Committee on Investments is expected to speed up Rs 49,000 crore worth power plants of companies like Reliance Power and Essar Power, which have been stuck for want of environment and forest clearances at various levels. The panel will consider diversion of forest land for a coal block attached to Rs 20,852 crore Sasan ultra mega power project.
Power sector to get additional gas till 2015-16
The Union Power Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia stated that from 2013-14 until 2015-16, all additional gas would be given to the power sector. The gas offered to fertiliser needs to be supplied, beyond that any additional gas would be given to power sector, Scindia said. An empowered group of ministers (EGoM) headed by Defence Minister AK Antony decided this on August 24.
Uttarakhand govt to bring in new power policy
Uttarakhand government would shortly formulate special policies for the development of new hydel projects and other reconstruction works in view of the June 16-17 floods. For this purpose, the government would set up a core group to formulate the new policy involving top environmentalists like Anil Joshi, the head of HESCO and The Energy and Resources Institute Director-General RK Pachauri, said the State Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna.
