Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways & Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), Nitin Gadkari virtually laid the foundation stones of nine national highway projects with a total length of nearly 262 km worth over Rs 27.52 billion in Tripura on Tuesday.

India and Bangladesh will work on a new rail link between the two countries along Tripura to ease surface transport in the mountainous north-eastern states. The work would start this year, officials of the two countries said in Agartala recently.

ONGC Tripura Power unit
The first unit of the 2x363.3 ONGC Tripura Power Corporation (OTPC) at Palatana in Tripura, which is on trial run, is set to start commercial operations by mid-February, provided the EPC contractor BHEL succeeds in stabilising the unit. OTPC is confident to offer adequate load to run the unit at full capacity as the transmission line from Palatana to Silchar in Assam already having been commissioned and on course to be extended up to Byrnihat in Meghalaya soon.

Container traffic in Indian ports has risen from 0.2 per cent in 1981 to 20 per cent in 2010-11. The total container throughput in FY2011 stood at over 9.4 million TEUs, witnessing a growth of 13 per cent over the previous year.
