The Airports Authority of India (AAI) on November 30 expressed its resentment over the poor city road infrastructure causing trouble to fliers from the Kolkata airport. The AAI’s criticism has come barely two months before the airport is slated to throw open to the public its brand new terminal.
BP Sharma, Regional Director of AAI said that there is lot of congestion on the (only) approach road to airport. There should be another road to airport. He was speaking at ‘Bengal Builds’ — a conference on urban infrastructure.
Sharma has his reasons to worry. Kolkata airport currently ferries nearly 10.5 million passengers a year. The number is expected to be doubled, once AAI opens up a modern terminal, creating space for more national and international flights.
