UP govt takes steps for Kanpur airport project

Uttar Pradesh government urged its officials to expedite the preparation of an action plan for the proposed new airport project in Kanpur.

The state government plans to find a land in Kanpur Dehat district for the project. Further, the state chief secretary Jawed Usmani is learnt to have directed officials to seek approval from the union defence ministry for night landing facility at the Defence Airport in Kanpur.

Airports Authority of India (AAI) wanted 50-acre land from the state government to expand infrastructure at Kanpur airport. AAI had a proposal for construction of a modern airport at Chakeri in two phases.

The airport designated for the Indian Air Force (IAF) is operating the air services in Kanpur, which is a key industrial, trade and commerce centre in the state.

Besides the Kanpur airport, the state government plans to set up two airports viz. at Kushinagar and at Agra under the public private partnership (PPP) model.

Land for the Kushinagar airport has been acquired by the government and it is in the process of finalising the spot for the proposed airport in Agra.

The government plans to set up Kushinagar airport on over 615 acre land at an estimated cost of Rs 350 crore. About Rs 210 crore had been paid in compensation for land acquisition.
