Ajit Gulabchand, Chairman & Managing Director of Hindustan Construction Company (HCC), who is also the Past President of Builders Association of India (BAI), has been elected President of the International Federation of Asian & Western Pacific Contractors Association (IFAWPCA) at its 39th convention held last month in Hong Kong. Prior to his appointment as President, he was the first Vice President of IFAWPCA.
Gulabchand has been a vocal advocate for sustainable development and actiÂvely represents India's infrastructure sector at a variety of international forums. A regular participant at the World Economic Forum (WEF) for almost two decades, Gulabchand was the first Asian to chair the Governor's Steering Board of the Engineering & Construction Community at the WEF in Davos, 2011. He was also Co-Chair of the WEF's India Economic Summit 2010. He is the only Indian business leader to participate on panels at the UN's Annual Summit on Climate Change, as well on the UN's Global Compact Summit. He is an Executive Committee Member of TERI – Business Council for Sustainable Development.
Incepted in 1956 in Manila, IFAWPCA today has more than 15 members ranging from Tokyo, Seoul in the north to Caberra, Wellington in the south and from the cities of ASEAN and its neighbours to the South-Asian capitals of New Delhi and Colombo.
