Upcoming ultra mega power projects (UMPPs) in the country have become a hope for orders of capital goods companies at a time when the order inflows have dried up. Now companies like Larsen & Toubro and Thermax are eyeing orders worth around Rs 24,000 crore from a two mega power projects in Orissa and Tamil Nadu.

Ten-year plan ready for Bihar power transmission
To augment and strengthen power transmission network in Bihar, the state government has prepared a master plan for the next 10 years. Under the plan, various works have been identified in the light of projected demand for power. Bihar expects power availability in the state to go up to 6,000 MW by the end of the current 12th Plan period in 2017 from about 2,000 MW at present.
Power from waste
By setting up solid waste management plants, the Gujarat government will run a pilot project in 50 cities to generate power, fertiliser and reusable water, said the state Chief Minister Narendra Modi. The state's rural areas will get the power, reusable water and fertilisers produced in these plants for usage in agriculture. Gujarat government will work with Japanese agencies for development of some of these plants by utilising cutting edge technology from Japan, the CM added.
Tatas wind power projects
Tata Power is setting up 160 MW wind projects throughout the country. Tata Power already has an installed wind energy generation capacity of 398 MW with projects across Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. From wind projects, the company saw its electricity generation rose 43 per cent to 813 million units in the year ended March 2013 from 569 million units in the previous year.
Alstom secures GVK contract
Alstom has bagged a contract worth about Rs 850 crore from GVK Power and Infrastructure to provide equipment for the 850 MW Ratle hydropower project in Jammu and Kashmir. The contract calls for Alstom to supply four 205 MW Francis turbine units and one 30 MW unit. The turbines will be manufactured at the company's facility in Vadodara. Alstom said it expects it to be commissioned in 2017.
Gamesa bags order from AP
Gamesa Wind Turbines will supply 27 units of G97-2.0 MW turbines at Tagguparthi in Andhra Pradesh for an emerging power and utility development company. It has signed a 54 MW wind power project order with the company. Under the contract, the commissioning is scheduled to be completed by May 2014.
Speedy clearance of exports in Kochi port
An export processing centre and Gate Module have been launched by the Customs Department at ICTT Vallarpadam for speedy export clearance
UltraTech terminal at Mumbai
To cut expenditure on logistics, UltraTech Cement is set to build a Rs 100-crore terminal at the Mumbai Port to transport cement from its plants in Gujarat into Mumbai.
Paradip Port to have container handling infra
To increase traffic through its route, Paradip Port Trust (PPT) in Orissa has decided to establish Ă´containerised cargo handlingĂ´infrastructure. The port is now worried over diversion of specific cargoes to major ports.
Coal transport for NTPC to begin via Waterway
To move imported coal from Sandheads to NTPCĂ´s super thermal power plant at Farakka in West Bengal along the National Waterway Number One (NW1) will start shortly. NTPC will use the coal for power generation purpose
