Steel makers in India told to produce high-grade products
Steel makers in India should adopt technologies for producing high-grade steels and avoid costly imports, said the Union Minister for Steel Beni Prasad Verma on September 4 in Delhi at a CII-organised event. India had imported 8 million tonne steel in the 2012-13 fiscal, up from 6.83 million tonne in 2011-12, and 6.66 million tonne in 2010-11.
RIL targets Venezuela for its oil block investments
Executive Director of Reliance Industries (RIL) PMS Prasad has said that the company is looking at oil and gas investment opportunities overseas, particularly in Venezuela. The company has offers for at least from two exploration blocks from the country. RIL, which imports about 3,00,000 barrels of crude oil per day from Venezuela, also plans to increase the quantity, Prasad said in Delhi. It is exploring investment opportunities in Mexico, Iraq, Canada and Myanmar.
GAIL pipeline can cause unrest: TN govt tell HC
The proposed gas pipeline project of GAIL (India) could spark farmersĆā unrest and large scale law and order problem in the State, the Tamil Nadu government has told this to the Madras High Court in response to a writ petition filed by GAIL challenging the StateĆās decision not to allow the pipeline to traverse agricultural lands and instead should be laid along national highways.
Adani told to set up Rs 200 cr green restoration fund
Acting on a recommendation of a committee of environmentalists, the Union Environment Ministry has asked Adani group to create a green restoration fund of Rs 200 crore for repairing the environmental damage done to Mundra in Gujarat. Adani's port and SEZ projects are coming up in Mundra.
NMPT registers a growth of 12.25% in cargo
In the first five months of 2013-14, the New Mangalore Port (NMPT) recorded a growth of 12.25 per cent in cargo handling. The port handled 15.76 million tonne of cargo from April-August as against 14.04 million tonne in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal (2012-13). Crude oil and coal contributed to the growth in port's cargo handled during the period, said the port's Chairman P Tamilvanan.
Improved fire and smoke alarm system in trains
Indian Railways has developed a fire & smoke detection system to be installed on train coaches for passengers safety. The system is capable of checking and giving alarm to passengers during initial stages of fire, thereby giving valuable time for shifting to safe areas and evacuation, says government reports.
AP govt gives nod to Rs 200 cr road tunnel project
A road tunnel of 1.6 km length is to be built under the Simhachalam hills in coastal Andhra Pradesh at a cost of Rs 200 crore under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) Plus scheme. The tunnel would reduce traffic on NH-16 and cut a 10 km distance to 5 km from the existing 15 km between Visakhapatnam and Simhachalam temple. Varaha Lakshminarasimha Swamy is the presiding deity of the famous temple.
Work on Panipat-Jalandhar h’way delayed
Though the toll rates on Panipat-Jalandhar highway have been hiked for the road users, widening work on the highway has been delayed and the concessionaire company is badly maintaining it, forcing the motorists to face hardhips.
