New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) has reportedly handled 37,101 Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) of container cargo so far during 2012-13 compared to 35,792 TEU handled during the corresponding period of 2011-12.
This represents a growth rate of 3.66 percent. The port expects the container traffic to rise going forward once the coffee season picks up and also with the arrival of more Main Line vessels during the remaining months of the current year.
It may be noted that the port management is taking several steps to woo importers and exporters from the neighbouring region.
For example, the port recently held a a joint Business Meet in association with the Hassan District Chamber of Commerce & Industries.
The purpose of the Meet was to interact with the coffee exporters from the Hassan region in the back drop of the forthcoming coffee plucking season. Major coffee exporters and the Dy. Director from Coffee Board have attended the Meet and had a fruitful interaction on routing their cargo through the Port.
